SE 101: Etiquette

"Etiquette" is one of five quizzes about Student Employment. When you have completed all five quizzes, Career Services will forward a certificate of completion to your supervisor.

Your answers will not be forwarded to your supervisor.

The Quiz

Please provide your student employee information. An asterisk indicates a required field.

1.) What should I do if I know I am going to be late to work?

  1. Call my supervisor and notify her as soon as possible.
  2. Sneak in and hope nobody realizes I was late.
  3. Do not show up at all - there's no point in going if I'm going to be late.
  4. Do my best to think of a good excuse.

Select your answer to question 1:

2.) I am not sure of the dress code. How should I dress for my first day at my new on-campus job?

  1. I know all about fashion. I will wear cool outfits I have to go out with my friends on the weekend.
  2. Probably what I wear to class is just fine.
  3. It does not really matter, it is only an on-campus job, not a real job.
  4. I should ask my supervisor to review dress code and give me examples of appropriate attire.

Select your answer to question 2:

3.) I have been offered a job at a place off-campus that pays a little better than my current job and has hours that fit with my class schedule better. How should I handle this situation with my current on-campus job?

  1. Go to my supervisor and demand a raise.
  2. After deciding to pursue the off-campus job, I give my supervisor notice at least two weeks in advance of my last day that I plan on leaving my on-campus job.
  3. After deciding to pursue the off-campus job, I call my supervisor and tell her that I will not be coming in to my on-campus job anymore. The pay is better at the new job, and I want to start making that extra money as soon as possible. She will understand.
  4. After deciding to pursue the off-campus job, I just stop showing up for my on-campus job without telling anybody. I did not get along with my supervisor, and the work I did was not all that important. I will not be missed.

Select your answer to question 3:

4.) Today is Monday. I am scheduled to work on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. At 2 p.m. on that same Wednesday afternoon, I also have a midterm exam for my math class and I forgot to notify my supervisor. What should I do?

  1. Notify my supervisor of the conflict as soon as possible, and make a better effort in the future to let him know about any possible conflicts before they arise.
  2. Do not show up for work, and do not tell my supervisor why I could not make it until I go in for my next scheduled shift. I missed because of class, and my education comes first. He will understand.
  3. Wait until Wednesday, and leave a message with a fellow student worker in the office right before my scheduled shift is to begin.
  4. Email my professor immediately and tell her that I request to make up the exam because I have to be at my on-campus job that day.

Select your answer to question 4:

5.) I am scheduled for a seven hour shift today. I have been here for three hours already - it is 1 p.m., and I am hungry. I want to get lunch, and I know that because I am working a seven hour shift, I can take a fifteen minute paid break and a thirty minute unpaid meal break. What should I do?

  1. Drop whatever I am doing and take off for lunch. I do not have to tell anybody that I'm taking a lunch break, because I am entitled to it and do not have to ask permission.
  2. Leave for my lunch break without telling anybody. It has been a slow day today, and nobody will notice I have left. It is the perfect opportunity to stretch a thirty minute lunch break into a one hour lunch break!
  3. Let my supervisor know that I want to take my thirty minute break. Ask if there is anything important that needs to be done before I leave or if I need to wait for somebody else to return before I go.
  4. Just keep working and hope my supervisor remembers to let me take my break.

Select your answer to question 5:

6.) I am sick today and can not make it in for my scheduled shift. What should I do?

  1. Call a fellow student employee and ask them to let my supervisor know I will not be in today.
  2. Find a way to make it in. If I miss a day at my on-campus job, I will be terminated.
  3. Do not do anything. My supervisor will either figure it out on his own or call me to find out why I am not there.
  4. Call my supervisor as soon as possible and let him know I am sick and will not be able to work today.

Select your answer to question 6:

7.) A student employee in my office wants to make personal copies. The student employee does not want to spend money to buy a textbook for her class. The office supervisor told all student employees that copies must be paid for at the front reception desk. The student employee is not paying for the personal copies. I am a student employee, and I am paying for all of my copies. What should I do?

  1. Nothing, I should not get involved.
  2. Explain the rules about personal copies to the other student employee, and if they persist, let my supervisor know about it.
  3. Tell the office supervisor right away.
  4. Tell all the other students.

Select your answer to question 7:
