October

Charlene Walker, Associate Director, and Gail Whitaker, Assistant Director, attended the fall joint conference of the Ohio Association of School Personnel Administrators and Ohio Association for Employment in Education (OASPA/OAEE), held in Columbus, Ohio, October 1 through 3. OASPA/OAEE offers professional development and promotion of sound and ethical practices in hiring , training and retaining education professionals.

Gail Whitaker completed a fourth term on the OASPA/OAEE Executive Board, having served as President beginning in 2006, and in Executive Board capacity as Past President in 2007 through 2008. Gail Whitaker is the Career Services liaison and adviser to the College of Education and Human Services, and, with Charlene Walker, coordinates Career Services' annual Education Fair and Interview Day, featuring 60+ school districts and offering nearly 1000 interviews on campus for primary and secondary teachers, administrators and counselors.

Charlene Walker is currently in her first year of a three year term as OAEE treasurer and will serve on the OASPA/OAEE Executive Board.

September

Debra Wilburn, Assistant Director, participated in the Disney Institute "The Disney Keys to Excellence" training program, on September 16, an event sponsored by the Wilmington Clinton County (Ohio) Chamber of Commerce. "The Disney Keys to Excellence" program provides workplace leadership development utilizing the ideals and practices of Disney.

Sheryl Kent, Assistant Director, successfully completed the Air Force Half Marathon, held at Wright State University, September 20. She completed the course in 2:08:48. Sheryl is training with Miles that Matter in preparation for the Rock N Roll San Antonio Marathon, San Antonio, Texas, to be held November 16, 2008. Through training and running she is raising funds for Premier Community Health (PCH), which has the only portable mammography unit in the region, and houses the local office of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (BCCP) which provides mammograms and breast health education for the uninsured and the underinsured in the region.  A future goal of this program is to assist women with any additional diagnostic fees associated with abnormal results and follow-up.

Sheryl Kent was elected President Elect for the Ohio Cooperative Education Association (OCEA).  OCEA is a nonprofit professional association whose membership is open to employers, educators, and those interested in Cooperative Education in the state of Ohio.  Sheryl has been an active member of OCEA since 2000, and has previously served as Treasurer, Research Chair, and Scholarship Chair.  As President in 2009 - 2010, Sheryl will organize drive-in workshops at various locations in Ohio, as well as organize and preside over the annual conference to be held in Columbus.

Debra Wilburn, Assistant Director, was one of 32 area Creative Catalysts selected by regional stakeholders to participate in a Dayton-focused Creative Communities Leadership Project (CCLP) workshop, led by the Creative Class, the consulting group of economic theorist and sociologist Richard Florida. The three day workshop, held March 4 through 6, at the Cannery Art and Design Center, reviewed case studies from other CCLP groups and locally derived data. At the conclusion of the meeting, participants generated and selected ideas for initiatives to promote economic growth in the Dayton region. Of the six ideas contributed to the process by Debra Wilburn, Film Dayton was selected to be one of five initiatives pursued by a Creative Catalyst subcommittee.
