Succeeding in the First Year on the Job

Your student turned new employee may feel giddy after successfully landing their first professional job. They may have just come from a 'top of the heap' experience, particularly if they are right out of college. They are used to being in charge in the old environment, used to being revered for their experience and knowledge about campus life, used to being the go-to person for ideas and solutions. They may be tempted to relax, lay back, and let come what they imagine to be justly due rewards. No expectation could be further from the demands of the first year on the job.

During the first year on a job, everyone is watching the new recruit to determine their potential. New employees who cultivate a positive impression will most likely be viewed positively, while those who make a negative first impression will find that it, too, endures. Starting out in a new place, with a new crowd, requires heightened awareness and a determination not to be unwittingly manipulated by negative forces in the workplace. Mistakes in the first year will damage the credibility of the recruit and may prevent advancement, not just in the current company but with other companies as well.
