Building Experience, 2nd through Final Year of College

We retain: 10% of what we hear; 15% of what we see; 20% of what we see and hear; 40% of what we discuss; 80% of what we experience.

Why should a student spend college time building experience?

Recruiters advise Career Services that job candidates with work experience in their field will get closer consideration than those without work experience.

Students who work while in college become more competitive job candidates because they:

  • Develop good, basic work habits and familiarity with workplace equipment.
  • Learn about formal and informal procedures and policies in the workplace.
  • Create useful networks of co-workers, supervisors, and other workplace contacts.
  • Participate in collaborative efforts, demonstrating team skills.
  • Gain field specific knowledge to help them move into higher level positions.

What part can you play in this process?

Career Services suggests that parents reward students throughout the Building Experience phase. Offering rewards is an appropriate way for parents and other caring relatives to move a student forward in the career development process.
