Annual Wage Increases For Student Employees

Student employees in classes 1-5 who are rehired in their positions for summer or fall quarter will see a 50¢/hour increase in their wage rates beginning July 1. The implementation of the wage increase at the start of the new budget year will allow departments to budget for student employee wage increases and is consistent with the office of Human Resources operations.

Previously, student employees averaged 40¢ in step increases over a calendar year. The 50¢ wage increase is a slight increase and is similar to what students previously earned in step increases. Thus, the wage increase will have similar budget implications as in previous years. The annual wage increase will not have an earnings cap which is a change in the previous step increase policy. The annual wage increase will be applied to current and new positions within the same job classification.

Student employees receiving a promotion within their current department of employment or accepting a higher level student employment position within the University will start at the base rate for the job classification. EXCEPTION: Student employees earning an hourly rate above the new job’s base rate will maintain their current wage rate.

A student employee accepting a position with a lower classification than one previously held will start at the base rate of the lower classification.

The office of Student Employment will automatically adjust the annual wage for rehired student employees during the summer and fall rehire process.

Students without continuous employment and who begin working after the end of fall quarter will start at the base rate for the job. Student employees must be on the payroll prior to April 15 and must maintain continuous employment to receive the annual wage increase.

Supervisors of student employees with non-continuous employment during the raise process should contact Student Employment regarding wage increases.
