Cooperative Education (Co-op) and Internship Programs

Career Services registers and evaluates students who are working in jobs consistent with their course of study. Students may find relevant work experience through a variety of sources, including faculty recommendations and Career Services' database The Wright Search.  Whether an employer calls the position a co-op or an internship, the student may register the experience with Wright State University, through Career Services.  Participation in the co-op and internship program is available beginning sophomore year, to students who meet the academic requirements.

Co-op is a no fee, non-credit-bearing, pass/fail course which confers recognition on the transcript. There is no limit on the number of co-ops for which a student may register. Internships registered under the co-op program also appear on the transcript.

Students in the College of Liberal Arts may register for a credit-bearing internship using a Liberal Arts Learning Contract. Students can earn a maximum number of sixteen credits from Learning Contracts.

Participation in co-ops and internships benefits all participants:

  • Students exercise the skills and knowledge learned in your classroom and extend your reputation into the community.
  • In the classroom, co-op and internship participants return with new ways of thinking about the subject matter, and enhanced resourcefulness with regards to practical application. Their input can energize the entire class.
  • A listing on the transcript validates the work experience as part of the student's educational program, which has proven valuable to students pursuing graduate or professional school.
  • Completing one or more quarters of field experience keeps a student competitive when it is time to search for career employment.
  • Co-op or internship participants please employers, who seek candidates with backgrounds in practical application of their discipline.
