Tips for Competing at Student Employment Job FairThe following tips will help you create a good first impression with employers at the job fair. Use the Student Checklist to assemble necessary documents. Arrive early and check in at the Registration table. Maps of the fair and a bulletin of current job openings will be available. You can speed up your progress through the line by completing your Student Employment Application in advance and bringing multiple copies with you. One copy of the Student Employment Application will be required at the Registration table for admission. Wear appropriate attire. If friends or parents ask to accompany you, advise them it would be inappropriate. They can help you by assisting with pre-fair research, proofreading your résumé, and practicing your interview skills. Do not chew gum. Do not bring a cell phone or children to the fair. Bring a printout of your WINGS Express accepted Federal Work Study Award to verify your Work Study award with prospective employers. Bring a copy of your fall class schedule. Visit the employers with whom you want to apply. Present a copy of your Student Employment Application . Make eye contact immediately when you introduce yourself. Use a firm (but not crushing) handshake and a strong, confident voice. Ask questions about the job. Sell yourself, with emphasis on skills you have and activities at which you have been successful. Be polite and attentive - do not look around the room when listening to a potential employer. Ask the employer about their planned timeline for making a hiring decision. Ask for a business card, or write down the employer's name, department name, phone number, and email. Double check the information for accuracy. Use this information to follow up with a thank you letter and timely contact regarding the hiring process. Appropriate follow up is an essential part of job search success.
