Direct Entry into the WorkplaceAt all life stages, exploring interests, building skills, and reflecting on experience are the three phases of career development. To get an appropriate and satisfying job after high school graduation, the student who is bypassing college will need to apply themselves with accelerated discipline and purpose. Self Knowledge is the Self StarterStudents seeking direct entry into the workplace after high school will benefit from the job search preparatory information in the section titled Helping Students Prepare for a Career.
What to DoFor comprehensive advising on the formal job search process, job candidates can refer to the Career Services Job Search Readiness section. When to Do ItFor college graduates the successful job search, resulting in a desirable career track position, lasts an average of six months. High school students who will enter the work force after graduation may find their search shortened due to greater availability of nonskilled and non-degree, entry-level labor and service positions. However, graduating seniors want time on their side, not working against them. The senior who is seeking direct entry into the workplace after graduation should be networking for full time job opportunities beginning the fall of their senior year, roughly the same timetable that their peers begin applying to college. Submission of formal applications should begin in earnest no later than March preceding graduation. |
