Transition to First Year at Wright State University

Effective Career Planning Course

Career Services offers Effective Career Planning (LA 201), designed for first and second year students seeking direction in choosing their major or their career. Pre and post course assessments verify that the course improves student understanding of the career planning process and assists students in career decision making.

Highly motivated students who are incoming freshmen to Wright State University may register for Effective Career Planning during the summer between their senior year of high school and their first fall quarter at the university.

First Year Programs through University College

Students who enter Wright State University without direct admission to a particular college are assigned to an academic division known as University College.  In University College the student receives general advising and other support services while they complete general education requirements and prepare for admission into a specific college.

University College also serves the overall first year student population through special programs designed to meet the unique needs of new students.

  • Student On-campus Advising and Registration (SOAR), an orientation program for direct-from-high-school students;
  • First Weekend, a combination of entertaining and practical activities to ease the high school to college transition.
  • Learning Communities, in which students take classes together and make connections with other first-year students.
